Maybe you heard it at a funeral. Maybe in a sermon, or across a kitchen table, right after you finally said out loud what was wrong.
At least you have your health. Count your blessings. Somebody always has it worse. You should be grateful.
Most people who say these things mean well. They still land like a door closing. Under the words sits another message: Your pain makes us uncomfortable. Please put it away.
If that is your history with gratitude, this guide won’t say the sentence again, only louder. You’ve heard it enough.

Starts where you are. It makes room for lament before thanks, because Scripture does. Then it goes to a table set on the darkest night of Jesus’ life, where he gave thanks anyway.

Looks at gratitude in the wreckage, at what research can and can’t say about thankfulness and the mind, and at what enough means when you’re short.

Follows gratitude past the self: to an outsider who came back, to complicated people, to generosity and justice, and to the small gifts most of us walk past.
Gathers simple habits from across the whole Church. Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant believers have argued about plenty. None of them has argued that God shouldn’t be thanked. The practices belong to all of them, and to you.
This is for the beleaguered. For people who still love Jesus but no longer fit where they used to sit on Sunday. For people who left a church, or were pushed out of one, and aren’t sure where they belong now. For the tired.
Take it a chapter at a time, or skip to the one that fits today. The PDF closes with check-in questions and prayer prompts, with lines to write on. If you’d rather keep your answers somewhere private, write them in the Faith Journal, free and private.
