When Earthly Power Collides with Eternal Purpose

In Liberal, Conservative, and Other Silly Words, we explored how Jesus transcended political categories—neither liberal nor conservative, He refused to be co-opted by human ideologies. His mission was never about political reform but about establishing a Kingdom not of this world.

But what happens when politics turns dark? When power is abused, the marginalized are silenced, and justice is twisted to serve the wealthy and powerful? Though Jesus did not come to build an earthly government, He never called His followers to passivity in the face of evil. So how should a Christian respond when injustice reigns?

Key Scripture Passages

Jesus said, ‘My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.'

John 18:36 (NLT)

O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8 (NLT)

Context: In John 18:36, Jesus is standing before Pontius Pilate during His trial, just hours before the crucifixion. Pilate, representing Roman authority, is trying to determine whether Jesus poses a political threat. In response, Jesus clarifies that His Kingdom is not of this world—it operates on a completely different plane, one not sustained by violence or earthly power.

Micah 6:8, on the other hand, comes from a prophetic confrontation centuries earlier. The prophet Micah is speaking to a people entrenched in religious ritual but far from God’s heart. In one sweeping statement, he reveals what truly matters to the Lord: to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him. Both passages were spoken in times of moral crisis, offering clarity about God’s values when human systems fall short.

The Tension: Jesus Stood Apart from Politics, Yet Confronted Injustice

Jesus rejected earthly political battles. He did not seek to overthrow Rome or establish a theocratic rule. Nor did he seek to unseat the ruling religious majorities represented by the Pharisees and Sadducees. He did not endorse a political party or economic ideology.

Yet, Jesus also did not ignore injustice. He rebuked religious leaders who exploited people, overturned tables when the temple became a den of thieves, and spoke hard truths to those in power. His Kingdom was not political in the human sense, but it was deeply invested in righteousness, justice, and mercy.

This means that while Christians are not called to idolize political movements, including the ones that partially align with kingdom values, we also cannot be indifferent to oppression and corruption. The challenge is faithful resistance—standing for truth and justice without losing sight of our greater allegiance to God’s Kingdom.

When Power Becomes Oppressive

Biblical Examples of Resistance

Throughout Scripture, we see examples of godly people standing firm in the face of unjust power:

  • The Hebrew Midwives (Exodus 1:15-21) – They defied Pharaoh’s command to kill newborn boys, choosing faithfulness over obedience to an unjust ruler.
  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3:16-18) – They refused to bow to Nebuchadnezzar’s statue, standing firm even when facing death.
  • Jesus Before Pilate (John 18:37) – He did not seek violent rebellion, yet He boldly testified to the truth, refusing to submit to corrupt authority.
  • The Early Church (Acts 5:29) – When ordered to stop preaching, they declared, “We must obey God rather than any human authority.”

Historical Examples: Christians Who Resisted Oppression

Just as Scripture highlights faithful resistance, history offers powerful examples of believers who stood against injustice in their time:

  • Dietrich Bonhoeffer – A German pastor and theologian who opposed the Nazi regime, Bonhoeffer spoke out against Hitler’s abuse of power and the church’s silence. He was eventually executed for his involvement in a plot to resist the Third Reich, famously writing, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil.”
  • Fannie Lou Hamer – A devout Christian and civil rights activist, Hamer endured beatings and threats as she fought for voting rights in the Jim Crow South. Her faith was inseparable from her activism: “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired,” she declared, calling on the moral conscience of the nation and the church.
  • Oscar Romero – As Archbishop of San Salvador, Romero became a voice for the poor during El Salvador’s brutal civil unrest. He condemned violence from both the government and rebel groups, urging repentance and peace. He was assassinated while celebrating Mass, a martyr for justice and mercy.

These men and women did not resist oppression for the sake of politics—they did so out of a deep allegiance to God’s Kingdom, where justice, mercy, and truth reign as the supreme values.

The Christian’s Duty in an Unjust World

To Reject Political Idolatry

No political system—no matter how well-intentioned—fully embodies the values of God’s Kingdom. While policies may sometimes align with biblical justice, we must remember that human governments are limited and often flawed. When we elevate a party, platform, or leader to a place of ultimate loyalty, we drift into idolatry. Our hope must rest not in the success of earthly rulers but in the reign of Christ, who alone is just, eternal, and true. As citizens of heaven, we engage politically with discernment, never devotion.

To Stand for Truth and Justice

Jesus boldly confronted injustice in His time—calling out hypocrisy, defending the oppressed, and refusing to remain silent when power was abused. He set a pattern for His followers: to advocate for the voiceless, to speak truth even when it’s costly, and to embody righteousness in every sphere of life. But our pursuit of justice is not about winning culture wars or political battles—it’s about living out the values of the Kingdom. When Christians act justly, we bear witness to a better way—one that honors God and restores dignity to others.

To Resist Without Hate

The way of Jesus is the way of radical love. Even in the face of cruelty, He refused to repay evil with evil. Instead, He taught us to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, and seek peace wherever possible. Resistance, in the Kingdom sense, is not fueled by rage or revenge—it’s grounded in mercy, humility, and truth. Christians are called to oppose oppression without becoming oppressors, to confront evil without letting it take root in our hearts. Love is not weakness; it is our greatest weapon.

To Stay Rooted in the Kingdom

In times of political chaos or moral decline, it’s tempting to place our identity in movements or causes. But the foundation of our hope is not found in national restoration—it is found in the unshakable Kingdom of God. Our allegiance to Christ gives us perspective: we resist injustice not out of fear for our country, but out of faith in our King. No matter how unstable the world becomes, we remain anchored in a deeper reality—one where righteousness, peace, and mercy never fail.

Supporting Scriptures for Further Reflection

  • Matthew 5:10 – “God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”
  • Romans 12:21 – “Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.”

  • Isaiah 1:17 – “Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.”
  • Philippians 3:20 – “We are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.””

Living the Tension—Hopeful, Courageous, Unshaken

Jesus is neither a political pawn nor a passive observer. He refused to be co-opted by earthly agendas, yet He was never indifferent to the suffering caused by corrupt power. His Kingdom transcends party lines, national borders, and cultural trends—and it invites us to live with a different kind of loyalty.

In a world where political rhetoric often drowns out compassion, and power is used to divide and dominate, the way of Jesus still calls. It calls us to reflect His justice, embody His mercy, and walk humbly as citizens of a higher Kingdom.

So when political landscapes turn dark, our response must not be fear or fanaticism—it must be faith. A faith that speaks truth without hate, resists evil without becoming bitter, and stays grounded in the unshakable hope of Christ.
