Let Someone Be Wrong

There's a moment that happens in most family gatherings—someone says something factually incorrect, politically opposite, or theologically sideways, and you feel your chest tighten.

You know the truth. You could say it. You have the receipts.

But what if good news, right now, looks like letting it go? Not because truth doesn't matter, but because this person matters more than winning.

Matthew writes that when Joseph discovered Mary was pregnant, he "resolved to divorce her quietly" because he "was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace." He could have made her situation public. He could have been technically correct and socially justified. Instead, he chose quiet mercy.

Sometimes love looks like swallowing your rebuttal and passing the potatoes. Sometimes good news is the correction you don't make, the point you don't press, the argument you let die in your throat because the person across from you matters more than being right.

Not every wrong thing needs your correction. Sometimes good news is choosing the person over the point, the way Joseph chose quiet mercy. (Matthew 1:19)
