Listening is one of the most underrated forms of righteousness. James tells us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry” (James 1:19). That isn’t about politeness — it’s about learning to value someone’s story more than our own opinions.

Proverbs warns that “to answer before listening—that is folly and shame” (Proverbs 18:13). Listening isn’t passive. It’s a deliberate act of compassion, a choice to set aside our assumptions and actually hear the ache or hope behind someone’s voice.

Righteousness listens because love can’t transform what it refuses to understand. When the church slows down and pays attention, healing begins in conversations where someone finally feels safe enough to speak.

Righteousness listens. Scripture says be quick to listen and slow to speak. Real love hears the heart beneath the words and refuses to answer before understanding. Listening is how healing begins. (James 1:19 / Proverbs 18:13)
