Sometimes, it catches you off guard. You’re in the middle of a heavy week, burdened with questions, running on fumes. The to-do list won’t stop growing. The prayers feel unanswered. And then—without warning—laughter that comes out of nowhere slips in.
A laugh. Light. Unexpected. Uninvited. And yet… healing.
That kind of laughter isn’t forced. It doesn’t deny what’s hard or pretend everything’s okay. It simply breaks in. A holy interruption. A reminder that joy isn’t something we have to manufacture—it’s something God still delights to give.
Sarah laughed like that once. When the angel told her she’d bear a child in her old age, she laughed—because it was ridiculous. Impossible. She’d spent decades making peace with a promise that never came, and now here was a stranger telling her the door she’d long since nailed shut was about to swing open. Of course she laughed. What else do you do with news too good to trust?
But God was already rewriting the story. Later she would say, God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me
(Genesis 21:6, NLT). The laugh of disbelief became, in the end, the laugh of testimony—proof that God had done the ridiculous thing after all.
That’s what grace does. It sneaks in through the cracks. It meets us in our disbelief. And sometimes, it brings with it a laugh so real it shakes the dust off our hearts.
You might not feel joyful today. Maybe it’s been a long stretch of waiting, surviving, hoping. But joy doesn’t wait for conditions to be perfect. Sometimes it just walks in and sits beside you, chuckling softly until you can’t help but join in.
It rarely comes from the circumstance improving. Unexpected joy tends to arrive sideways—through a small, ordinary mercy that has nothing to do with the problem you’re carrying. A phone call from a friend. A silly moment with a pet. A memory that bubbles up and warms your chest before the worry can catch up to it. It isn’t a sign that the hard thing is over. It’s a sign that God is still present inside it, still capable of surprising a heart that had stopped expecting to laugh.
Here’s the mystery: God isn’t threatened by your sadness or weariness. But neither is He limited by it. He knows how to send delight into dry places—delight that requires nothing from you but the willingness to notice it when it comes.
Laughter isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s just a smile that escapes you before the worry can chase it away. But whether it’s a full belly laugh or a quiet shoulder-shake, it reminds you of something essential: you are still alive. Hope is not lost. God is still good.
You were not made for endless tension. You were created for joy—real joy that grows even in mystery. The kind of joy that doesn’t cancel pain, but coexists with it, and somehow makes the weight easier to carry. The two are not opposites fighting for the same room in your chest. They can sit side by side, and often do, in anyone who has lived long enough to grieve and laugh in the same week.
So today, don’t resist the laughter. Welcome it. Let it be a crack of light through whatever shadow you’re walking through.
Let it remind you that the story isn’t finished yet. That God still writes surprise endings. That grace still has a sense of humor.
And that sometimes, the most sacred thing you can do is laugh anyway.
